Society taking tuna to market

Port Lincoln Times:
Society taking tuna to market

20th March 2017

The Tacoma Preservation Society is hoping to branch out with its tourism trips by offering Adelaide shoppers a taste of South Australian tuna.
For the first time the society supplied an Adelaide supermarket with tuna caught during its February/March tuna poling trips.

A three-day women’s trip was unsuccessful in catching any tuna but a five-day men’s trip saw the boat meet its 44-tuna quota near Wedge Island.
Eight of these fish were sent to the Frewville Foodland while the rest will be made into products locally, which the society hopes to use to raise money to maintain the Tacoma.

Society president Ross Haldane said this was a part of a long term plan to further position Port Lincoln as the tuna capital of Australia.

“Historically the Australian market hasn’t been kind to tuna due to a lack of knowledge in the supply chain,” he said.
Mr Haldane said there was a growing trend for supermarkets to grow their seafood sections.
